Los Angeles Autorama AKA Motorama Returns to the Shrine Auditorium! 2012
So I got a call from the Shrine Auditorium and Convention Center to come up and do a venue walk through last week on Thursday. They wanted me to see the venue and discuss any projects I might have that could be held at the facility.
About 2/3rds through the meeting it hits me that this is where the 1950 Motorama was held. I just had recently learned of the event through an ad that is in 1950 November issue of Hot Rod that I just picked up at the LA Roadster show swap meet this past June (attached).
So I went ahead and secured dates for the launch of the Spring time- Los Angeles Autorama -at the Shrine March 2012. Exact date will be released at the Long Beach Motorama.
Because of the size of the venue we will be going with the Autorama title and keep it to Hot Rods and Kustoms only at the Shrine, leaving the LB Motorama to represent all forms of transportation that has a engine. There will be an outdoor area as part of the Autorama for people to have their cars viewed under the Spring Time sun of Southern California as well.
Stay tuned

The Renegades Scrapbook
I am knee deep in getting the Renegades Scrapbook scanned and archived for display at the Motorama. As I am going through it, one things becomes very clear. The club won show after show Gardenia-Compton-Montebello-Wilmington-San Diego. In most cases they take home 8 trophies and some shows 12. In 1956 they started a show at Bellflower High called “Rene-Cade”, it took place twice and then looks like it is the show that will become the 1958 Motorama in the LB Municipal Auditorium.
Here is a the Table of Contents I have compiled for reference.
1. Club Members
2. ACCLB (Association of Car Clubs Long Beach)
3. SoCal Car Shows 55-57
Gardenia-Compton-Wilmington-San Diego-Montebello
4. “Rene-Cade” Car Show 56-57
Bellflower High School
5. Social Activities
6. Party Time
7. Limelight
8. Cards
9. Weddings
10. Misc.
I feel I should be able to have up to the first four chapters ready for display at the Motorama.
Wall of Legends Display!
Wall of Legends is a 3 dimensional display of America’s first generation of Car Kustomizers. These men created a sport and lifestyle all in their young teenage years; for all of us to enjoy and pass on. We have captured the life they have given to the sport through the casting of their hand in repose. Some hold lead; while another holds an apple, some hold paint guns while another pin stripes. The hand is mounted on a shelf/wall plaque and made of walnut. Atop the casted form is a picture of the kid builder, in most cases showing him doing what he loves; Kustomizing. Below the shelf is the engraved plaque stating name-surname/title and year of induction.
There will be 11 of these extraordinarily creative individuals on the Wall of Legends display.
1. Bill “The Lead Slinger” Hines
2. Dean “The Striper Kid” Jefferies
3. Frank De Rosa Sr.
4. Joe “Candy Apple Red” Bailon
5. Dick “Lil Peep” Jackson
6. Hershel “Jr.” Conway
7. George “King of Kustomizers” Barris
8. Gene Winfield
9. Sam Foose
10. Sam Barris
11. Larry Watson
As the years go on we will be adding first generation builders from the Mid-West, South West and East Coast. So if you know one of these Legends please forward their contact information so we can include as many of them as possible.
Once the hands are casted; the concrete form is stored in a welded metal vault with the builders name and any information they want engraved on the outside. This is to ensure that the next civilization to walk and drive on this earth knows that these men, in our time, did this, and we loved them for it!
